Need advice from frequent flyers!

So as many of you know I'm doing a Disney trip in October with my folks, brother, sister in-law and niece & nephew. Well, I started looking at flights today and HOLY COW are they expensive. I'm used to being able to get flights from Philadelphia to Orlando for around $275 but for some reason the cheapest one I'm finding is $323. So here's my question....is it better/cheaper to book flights 5 months in advance or wait a while and take my chances the flight costs will come down a bit? I'm worried about getting good flight times (to maximize our park time) so I'm thinking I should just bite the bullet and book the $323 flights. Thoughts?

Remember MCO is not the only airport in Florida especially if you're renting a car. On past trips we've flown into Tampa and Sanford.

Another technique I've used is to book the hotel for two weeks, then play around with flights inside of that window. Sometimes it's cheaper to fly on a weekday.

Try looking up the airline Allegiant. Its a small airline that flies in and out of smaller airports and usually has cheaper fares. The only problem is that they only fly on certain days. And they don't fly into MCO, only Orlando/Sanford airport which is a little outside of Orlando, but if it saves you a decent amount of money, it wouldn't hurt to get a cab to drive you down to your resort.

$323?? Holy crap!!! I realize it's a different season, but I booked Southwest in I think Oct for the trip in May we just came home from. I think one way was $89 pp, and the return trip was $130 pp or so. And that was Philly to Orlando. Southwest.com is the only way you can book them, not through expedia or whatever. I also paid the $10 extra pp each way for early bird boarding. Good luck finding something cheaper. I know looking at the rates after I booked, they just climbed higher and higher. Both flights were sold out eventually.

the best advice i can give is go onto one of those sites like hot wire or orbitz or cheap o air and put your dates in and ask for updates, they will send you updates when prices drop, we dit hot wire i think and our flights went from $327.00 eventually down to $247.00 or $237.00 i forget but either way i got 3 round trip non stop from bos to mco for $805.79 on delta. it is worth doing you never now when the deal's are coming.

That's only a $48 per person difference in what you were expecting. The tough part is that there are several of you going.

I always fly United. Often you can find less expensive flights on sites like Expedia but they don't usually give the taxes and fees, so you think you're getting a deal, but then when taxes and fees are included it's just the same as booking through the airline. I've personally not ever had luck waiting for prices to go down and end up paying more than when I first looked. That could just be my bad luck.

If you want to be sure that you get the flight you want, when and where you want, the only way to do it is to just pay the money and let it go. You may be able to find a better deal, but how much are you willing to compromise on the flights? I'm personally fairly unrelenting on where/when/who I'm willing to fly, so I usually just suck it up.

Are you looking at direct flights only? I found RT on Delta for $297 (with taxes) for your dates with layovers. I think another reason for the higher rates is that you don't have a Saturday night stay. I looked at prices with a return on Sunday and found $223.

Hey JoAnn, we are only looking at direct flights. With two kids ages 5 and 8, we'd prefer not to have to make any stops.

I really appreciate everyone's tips! I'll probably just end up sucking it up and paying for the flights we want. We're going to discuss it tomorrow night at our weekly family dinner!

We are flying on American. I would suggest trying any additional airports within proximity of your comfort-zone to depart in and out of. Ironically, we've found the best fare from San Diego which connects us in LAX as opposed to flying out of LAX. I know American has a price guarantee as well so if the fare drops you'll get a refund or credit for a future flight.

If you'd like to set up a fare watch, I use kayak.com. I think you can also download a fare watch program directly from Southwest airlines, it's called Ding.

Good luck!

The rates I found on Tuesday evening for $323 went up by the time we went to book the flights on Wednesday. The new price is $368. YIKES! I'm going to take some of the advice I got here and look at alternate airports! Jess/Mase I hope you find something cheaper!

When I'm scouting for airline tickets I use http://www.bing.com/travel/

If you aren't familiar, it tracks prices and gives you recommendations on whether the fare is likely to increase or decrease.

I wouldn't put all your eggs in that basket, however I do use it when I'm looking for flights and I've found their guidance useful.

I was able to get flights back down at the $323 rate out of Philadelphia by taking a later flight home which gives us more magic time on our last day clapping . I booked them before they jumped up again!

Senceicj...my mom said the same thing about Tuesday being the cheapest day to book. I was going to wait until next Tuesday but I was afraid there wouldn't be any seats left on on the flight we wanted. Oh well.

If you don't mind driving to Harrisburg they currently have non stop flights from MDT for $188 including taxes on Frontier. The airport is great to fly out of and only an 1:45 from Philly. Also much cheaper parking.

Opps sorry I think I was too late. See what happens when you reply before reading the whole thread.

Thanks Gustavenla68. Frontier only flies into Orlando on certain days and unfortunately, it wasn't the day I needed. I appreciate the thought though!
