What happens to ROFR points?

Hey all,

We are seriously contemplating buying into DVC resale. I understand how Disney's Right of First Refusal works but I'm wondering what happens to the points when they exercise this right and buy them back? Since they only sell new, where to the points go? Do they turn around and re-sell them in some fashion?

Just trying to understand all the details of how DVC works.

Thanks for any info you can provide! yay

So does that mean they are selling points for all resorts?

Disney keeps a waiting list for folks that have requested points (usually add ons) at resorts they are no longer selling. Disney keeps that list, and occasionally snatches up a contract to fill that request. They do indeed sell them at a higher rate than resale, but with the full Disney amenities and privileges associated with direct purchases.

Ahhh... okay, that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying this. I had a hard time finding the answer to this question when reading the standard "how DVC works" type articles. awesome

LOL! It just made your point extra clear. laugh

Actually, this happens to me quite a bit when using the iPad to post. Sometimes it stops working and looks like it didn't post anything when in fact it did.

Yes, they do sell them back with all the rights of buying from Disney Directly.

Let me add a little bit of information to this, with the note that this is how it was done 3 years ago when I was looking at doing it, things could have changed since them.

If you are buying ROFR points you have to be ready to go with the purchase at a moments notice and they do not finance them. When you put your name on the waiting list you have to give them a credit or debit card with the full amount of the purchase price available. Your name stays on the waiting list until Disney is able to get the points back, and then they are immediately charged to the card that you leave. If you for some reason the money is not on the card - you don't get the points. If you have overdraft protection on the account and the points go through even if the money is not there - Disney and your bank don't care. You are liable for the full amount of the purchase when Disney says so. This process can happen so quickly that Disney frequently don't contact you first when the points come up - you've already committed and they just do it.

Disney will happily sell you ROFR points. You just have to be ready to fully commit financially on the fly.

Interesting Kristen! I did no know that! CRAZY! But what a great, kind of, surprise that could be, if you are able to buy that way. "Oh! Look! We are now owners at Beach Club! Let's go on vacation!"

So are the ROFR points the same price as the other points?

It makes no difference how points go back into DVC inventory(via ROFR or loan default), or at what price, Disney will currently resell those points at these prices: http://www.dvcnews.com/index.php/dvc-program/financial/pricing-a-promotions

So for example, even though DVC might have exercised ROFR on three different BWV contracts at $75/pt, $80/pt, and $85/pt, DVC will resell those BWV contracts at $130/pt(currently).

Hope that helps.
