Sid's Magical Mystery Tour

Ok, apologies for the lack of pics. I promise to add some later - or I might put some at the end of each batch of days.

So I made my 3rd trip to the U.S. in just over a year - Orlando in October last year, touring the west coast in April and back to Orlando but this time with my folks in tow. Now, I'm not one for making plans, mostly due to having to cater for one of my parents who isn't massively into theme parks or Mickey Mouse...!

Day 1: The Magic Kingdom
We turned up fairly early, not on rope drop but early enough as I knew there would be long lines for the Diamond Cart Mine a Ride, and I wasn't 'disappointed'! Being first on my rough list of things to do, I warned my folks that there might be long wait times for things. My mum is happy to go along with things but my dad hates waiting for anything, so had comments about things taking far too long to get anywhere in general...now before you ask why I didn't get a fast pass, I did...except in family tradition, we didn't book anything till quite late and I attempted to get fast passes for the first day with little luck. Anyway, after 90 minutes (probably a bit less), we got to the ride. It was worth the wait. I've never ridden a smoother roller coaster ever! The swing of the cart bodies made things seem ultra smooth with a Brer Rabbit-eque ride through the seven dwarfs diamond mine a nice touch. My folks enjoyed it despite the wait and in a surprise, for me, in any case - I got invited into a selfie with my temporary cart companion...if you're a member of the forum, please get in touch as I'd like a copy of the pic! This last second surprise ending to the ride amused my fols no end...!

After this, it was mostly walking about trying to work out what my dad wanted to do other than not go on anything(!) so the first day was restricted to a ride on The Little Mermaid...very similar in feel, to me, to The Haunted Mansion but it gave a nice precis of the story. I took my mum to check out Carousel of Progress whilst my dad wandered around outside - he'd been told not to bring his coffee in, so chose to sit things out. After that, it was a wander round Storybrook, up and down Main Street so I could take pictures and a trip into Guest Relations where I managed to get tickets to Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party for Thursday...perhaps not a bad thing seeing as I was trying to break my dad into all things Disney gently! I did manage to get them to eat hot dogs at Casey's, so not all was lost...!

Part 2 of The Magic Kingdom to come later...

Day 2: Epcot
A more successful day as this wasn't about me forcing my folks onto rides but onto stuff they liked before. My mum is a massive fan of Soarin' so we made this the first destination and a much shorter wait time than The Diamond Cart ride and also the first time when my folks rode it in 2007. As usual my mum took great joy in playing the interactive games to while away the time and we were there in less than an hour; in '07, we waited more than 2 hours to soar for 3 minutes! In a slight change to the Soarin' I remembered, we ended up flying down Disneyland's Main Street to end the flight. A visit to Test Track 2.0 followed which we all enjoyed, although we chose the single rider line to cut down the wait time. After that, a ride on Spaceship Earth where my mum happily told my dad that M had voiced the narration and told me that fact after (which I knew but allowed my mum to tell me...not always a good idea to be the know-it-all all the time!) we skipped the rest of the rides as I knew they wouldn't be able to ride Mission to Mars and thankfully, Ellen's Universe of Energy was down.

We spent the rest of the day touring The World Showcase. A quick trip with The Three Caberellos ended up with a silly pic of me in a sombrero and we had a disappointing wander through one of the Norwegian houses where it seems Frozen has stomped all over things again. We looked at the warrior exhibit in the China pavilion with a recreation of the Terracota Army and spent a little time looking through the oddly laid out emporium before cleaning the snack shack of its curry chicken puffs and most of the spring rolls in order to make up a version of their platter deal...we whizzed thru Germany and Venice before stopping for a while at Japan, watching the Japanese dude hardly contain himself as he went thru 5 pearl 'discoveries' in quick succession. We glossed over The American Adventure (sorry USA!) and France before stopping to watch The British Revolution in the British pavilion. Passable covers but Ozzy playing at Disney? Is this a normal part of their routine...? The final stop was Canada as we saw a bit of their replacement chainsaw act. What happened to all the music In the World a showcase?

Day 3: Hollywood Studios
Again, this was initially about getting my folks to try stuff they hadn't been to before or done in a long time. Today it was about Star Tours, The Little Mermaid (again) and Beauty and the Beast for my mum. I took my folks onto The Great Movie ride and managed to get a sub 50 minute wait for Toy Story Mania as well. Whilst I sent my folks to watch Beauty and the Beast, I took the rare opportunity to ride both The Rock 'n' Roller Coaster AND The Tower of Terror BEFORE they finished the show...!! I always ride the Aerosmith coaster when I'm in town and believe they'd cleaned up the video for the pre-ride teaser and shortened it. I'd never ridden The Tower of Terror. I'm not a big fan of 'drop you whilst you crap your pants' rides but a supposed 25 minute wait turned into a 5 minute wait and I figured I'd have nothing to lose. It's not a bad ride...certainly less scary than I thought it would be although the lady next to me was hanging on for dear life and screaming until it finished and she started laughing instead. The Little Mermaid show was better than Beauty and the Beast, in my opinion in terms of how they edited the movie to fit into a limited time. The use of clips from the movie was good.
We took in The Muppet 3D movie and watched a 'film' crew carry out a shoot on the Streets of America which was amusing. I persuaded my dad to stay around for Indiana Jones. He figured he'd seen it once and it wouldn't be the same, but it was different enough to even when I saw it last - no more rolling stone and I think they'd moved the plane sequence around and this time they blew the truck up where they didn't when I watched it last.
After this, it was a small case of hanging around for the first of three showings of Fantasmic. Again this has changed since I last saw it but it was a nice end to the day.

More to follow and I'll edit in some pics at some point soon...assuming I remember to finish the report...!

Day 4: Magic Kingdom and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party
We took the morning off from going to a park as I knew we'd be out fairly late (for my folks), so I took off to Downtown Disney to do bit of shopping for a couple of hours. They've really boarded everything up and closed a huge number of properties there which I hadn't realised.

The afternoon came round and we took off for the park, hoping the party would be worth the additional cost. We did a few things we missed on Monday - Pirates of the Caribbean, The Jingle Cruise, The Jamboree Bears. I swear the trip thru the Pirates ride was a little different. There was Ian McShane narrating at the beginning of the ride but has Barbossa gone? I'd never ridden The Jungle Cruise before but enjoyed it despite the cringeworthy cruise track which had to have been done 100 times before I got on. My mum enjoys musical things so she enjoyed the Bears, probably more than me and my dad...! We made up for it by shooting some stuff at the frontier arcade and even managed to get a longer shoot in thanks to a few faulty guns. The CM switched the guns back on and my dad had 5 minutes of enjoyment, shooting the red lights. Can't remember how long things went for but it was definitely more than 35 shots! We even managed to squeeze in The Tiki Room, another show I'd never seen before and another one my mum enjoyed a lot more!

We sat down with a smoked turkey leg whilst we waited for the 7pm kick off and promptly pounced on the free hot chocolate and cookie being offered throughout the night. Due to the timings of certain things, we missed the first Frozen run through and the Christmas Parade was delayed due to technical difficulties, so we had the frozen, the parade, celebration and the big fireworks in quick succession.

Due to needing to find and hold onto a decent vantage point, I didn't get a chance to check out Tomorrowland's Christmas festivities and spent a fair bit of time trying to work out the correct nighttime settings on my camera...so much time that I ended up running out of juice on the Nikon meaning I had to fall back on my point-and-shoot skills on the iPhone instead...also due to our vantage point, a rather unfortunately placed tree meant we only saw splattering a of colour as most of the fireworks went behind the tree! However, what we saw was great!

Finally, as we headed out, I got to see it 'snow' in Florida for the first time!

Certainly worth the additional money but next time I'll stake out a slightly better vantage point and try to check out Tomorrowland's get up instead of doing more rides...!

Apologies for the state of these pics...I've only partially edited them!

Day 5: Animal Kingdom

Today was animal kingdom time, to complete the park tour for my folks. My mum is a big fan of The Lion King, so we had that on the list, together with Kilimanjaro Safari, Expedition Everest (for me), Dinosaur and Finding Nemo. This was the first time I'd seen The Lion King since it reopened and whilst it seemed largely unchanged to me, my mum believed it was a lot different. It was vice versa with Finding Nemo where I believe it was a lot different to the show of 6 years back which was when I saw it last.

I really don't have a lot to say about AK, unfortunately. A large portion is boarded up due, I'm guessing, to the Avatar expansion (I still don't like that idea!) but will say it is somewhere that my brother will his twin sons (God help his soul!) and they'll find enough to enjoy there for a day.

Awwww your castle pics a gorgeous!

We saw the rolling stone in Indiana jones a few weeks ago so maybe it just wasn't working the day you watched the show? I feel the same as your dad about the show really, seen it more than once, don't feel the need to see it again at all. Only watched it this last time as I'd forgotten how little I enjoyed it.

Your pics of the castle are great. Honestly, they speak for themselves. awesome

But I have to agree about Indy. I love the Indiana Jones films as a whole, but after seeing the Indy show a few times, it's not really a must do, I must say. I really hope a Star Wars stage show takes it place being that I also like Star Wars and Hollywood Studios deserves better than just Jedi Training Academy alone.

Ok, so I know his is a disney forum, but my trip has also included a trip out to Kennedy Space Center and 'The Opposition' aka Universal over this weekend.

Having Disney'd out my folks over the past week, I decided I should allow them a break by driving out to KSC on Saturday, followed by an opposition trip today.

KSC hasn't changed much in the almost 20 years since I first visited. The Atlantis exhibit being the major change here. However, I do like the place and always seem to spend a ton here regardless of how hokey it might be to some. I missed the launchpad tour last time due to the government shutdown but got onto it this time and enjoyed the Saturn V exhibit. The Atlantis show was a surprise to my folks. They really thought there was nothing much left after Saturn V but they enjoyed looking around 'the ol' gal' and the shuttle launch experience.

We visited Universal today. Almost immediately, the comment was 'it's not Disney...' By that they immediately noticed people smoking and drinking and that it was a more adult park. The mission here today was to cram in a few rides, see The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and to get onto The Hollywood Rip, Record, thingamy...did we succeed? Well, let's go thru what we were able to all go on:
The Amazing Spider-Man ride
Transformers 3D
Disaster! The Ride
HP and the ride thingy thru Hogswart
The Hogswart Express
Escape from Gringotts
The Hollywood Rip Record thingamy roller coaster (for me)
Surprisingly, the wait times were pretty low - 30 minutes being the most we had to wait. We enjoyed these rides, chosen by me to be as 'gentle' as possible on my folks as possible except for the Gringotts ride...having not been around when it was first opened, the most I could say was 'it's about to drop' seconds before the car dropped, but even that was laughed off moreorless...!

Oh, my, now I really want to go to Universal to see the new Diagon Alley and Hogwarts Express. But it probably won't happen for a couple of years at least.

Love the photo of Hogwarts in particular, but all of them are fantastic.

I have no problems with pics from Kennedy and Universal. I haven't been back to Uni since 2004, way before the Harry Potter areas came to the parks. And being a fan of the books and movies, I have great interest in seeing Wizarding World and Diagon Alley up close. Great pics overall. That's an interesting angle of the Hogwarts Castle. Many just want the entire castle right side up, probably the same thinking for Cinderella Castle, too.

After a small break from all things manic, I went on The Keys To The Kingdom tour today. I turned up at MK on probably the chilliest day I've encountered for a long time, including the recent weather back home in the UK! A max of 15 degrees wasn't in the plan when I packed my suitcase, but luckily I had long pants and a light windcheater...I should have worn my Converses but persisted with the crocs for walking - and it was cold!!

Anyway, I've never been in the park before rope drop before and i must have felt the angry eyes of hundreds of guests who weren't allowed to come in when i did! After checking in, I was given around 35 minutes to wander about and managed a couple of relatively people free shots...but not many - it was too cold to do anything but huddle out of the wind!

8.55 rolls around and we're greeted by Haylee, our guide for the day and self confessed 'crazy woman with the mic'. She starts off by giving us a little potted history on her involvement with Disney before taking us up Main St to point out a few of the named windows - M.T Lott, Card Walker and Walt's own window placed at the end of Main St above the ice cream parlour. We also get a breakdown of how the park is laid out like a movie and the 4 keys to all things Disney (Safety, Courtesy, Show and Efficiency if any of you wanted to know) More potted history on Disney and how he got outed by a young lady reporter on his buying up of Florida land before we moved on towards Adventureland.

We stop at The Jungle Cruise, or Jingle Cruise as it is currently known and take shelter under a boat canopy during a light shower whilst Haylee gives us some facts about the ride and enticing Kevin, our pilot, to attempt to go off track to explain how the boat is on a rod but with enough play to allow a sense of movement. We're told about the Hippo-bottomlesses and how the imagineers basically took a design in Cambodia and replicated it for Disney.

After the ride is over, we're walking through and stop at The Enchanted Tiki Room and it's position in Disney history as the pioneers of animatronic. We get a story about Lillian Disney loving a mechanical bird cage despite it not working properly which prompts Walt to challenge his own engineers to do it properly before berating them 'it's not breathing' when a fully functional bird is produced. A small tap on the thatched roof tells us it's aluminium due to the need to keep things safe in the Florida heat.

Next we get the story about Oswald and his journey from Disney to Universal and back again which leads onto Mickey and how Disney managed to trade a real person for a cartoon character who'd lain dormant for the best part of 70 years or so. This does kinda explain the rivalry between the two park franchises and how this might affect currently running Marvel deals...

We continue on into Liberty Square and a quick stop for lunch and a respite from the cold. After, we wandered over to the Haunted Mansion and snuck in the back door to sneak a ride and to try and spot a couple of hidden Mickeys. I found one but was on the wrong side of the doom buggy to spot the other.

More info on Liberty Square and why there are no toilets there, tying in with Disney's wish to be as historically accurate as possible - this period of time featured no indoor toilets but if you're looking for some, follow the brown cobblestone path. Off to the left will lead you to Frontierland's toilets whilst the right will take you to Entangled's facilities. The reason for the brown cobblestone path? It's meant to represent the waste thrown out each morning by each household...!

We went off stage twice. Once to look at the huge hangar housing the Electric Light Parade and the Evac waste disallow system, along with the million gallon reservoir used to water Spalsh Mountain. This was after explaining why there is a drop at the start of PoC. The second time off stage was for the highlight of the tour...the fabled Utilidor experience. It was a privilege to see how Disney functions below ground but at the same time, almost like revealing the 'how' of your favourite trick...

I was fascinated by how much our tour guide knew and how, even all this time after Walt and Roy's deaths, things are still referred to as 'we' rather than they and anecdotes are as if they happened yesterday or last month, not decades in the past.

I'm glad I took this tour...it whets the appetite in wanting to take the longer tour that encompasses all 4 parks but that'll be next time...

Got a nifty little Key to the kingdom as a keepsake...and I didn't realise it was Mickey's birthday today as well!

I stuck around a little bit before heading to Hollywood Studios in search of Star Wars stuff...of which I didn't find that much!

They moved Roy's bench to make space for the Christmas tree that is due up this weekend or sometime soon.

Well, in what is probably my last visit to a park for maybe the next year or so, I revisted Epcot to get onto stuff i didn't get to during this trip.

We did Living with the Land, The Circle of Life, (I did) the Ride thru Imagination with Figment, Captain EO, Ellen's Energy Tour and Mission: Mars and The American Adventure. My folks went to Mitsukoshi to go Pearl picking and got a pair of 7mm pearls.

I could swear the narration for Living with the Land has been changed since I rode it last and they appear to have sorted out some of the timing issues with abruptly ending segments.

The Circle of Life was a first for me...and whilst I appreciate the message behind it. It's likely to be a show I won't revisit in a hurry...

I couldn't recall riding into the imagination with figment before but may have done so a long while back. It was fairly enjoyable.

Captain EO is one of those oddities that shouldn't be mega enjoyable but turns out to be an ok watch. For something that hasn't been tweaked or reimagined in 25 years, it holds up pretty well except for the slightly ropey 3D effects. It's unfortunate that all this really does is show how much of a showman in Michael Jackson we lost...

Ellen's Energy Tour needs some updating. It was closed the first time we visited last week but as the wait times today were remarkably low, we went on the tour again.

Mission: Mars was interesting. It would appear my folks hadn't ridden this before and I took them on the Orange more intense version of the ride...! Afterward, they both said they enjoyed it although they noted it was physically more intense than the KSC version and definitely feel the G forces acting on them.

After popping into Mitsukoshi at the Japan pavilion, I popped over to take in The American Adventure. I'd not seen this show before but was pleasantly surprised to see so many audio animatronic figures in such a small stage.

Interestingly enough, that "real person" was Al Michaels, the play by play man for Sunday Night Football on NBC. Her was "traded" from ABC and Disney when he was the main commentator for Monday Night Football in exchange for Oswald and for broadcasting rights of the Ryder Cup and extended highlights of NBC Sports.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2324417

Anyway, sounds like you had a good time on the tour and in Epcot.
