Disney Movie Songs One Step Closer to Original Song Oscar

Yesterday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a list of 39 songs that have the potential for bringing home the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 84th Annual Academy Awards. Songs from Disney movies accounted for almost 25% of that list.

The nine songs that could make the final nomination list include:

  • "The World I Knew" from Disneynature's African Cats
  • "Collision of Worlds" Disney/Pixar's Cars
  • "Hello Hello" and "Love Builds a Garden" from Touchstone Pictures' Gnomeo & Juliet

Disney Nabs Four Thea Awards

The Themed Entertainment Awards announced their choices for this year's Thea Awards recipients on Tuesday, naming four that were Disney-related.

Disneyland and Walt Disney World shared an award for outstanding achievement in the "attraction refresh" category for Star Tours. The attraction reopened in May in both the California and Disney Hollywood Studios locations.

Disney World also nabbed another award with the nightly Magic Kingdom show, "The Magic, The Memories and You." Shown on Cinderella's Castle, it received outstanding achievement in the "show spectacular" category.

'Lion King' On Broadway Turns 14

Disney's smash Broadway hit "The Lion King" celebrated fourteen years on the stage yesterday at the Minskoff Theate.

Those fourteen years on Broadway have created some pretty nice stats for the show, which began November 13, 1997. First off, the show currently ranks seventh in terms of long-running Broadway musicals. It also is one of only six other shows to pass the ten year mark on Broadway and in the West End. In financial terms, "The Lion King" has grossed some 4.7 billion dollars.

Disney Submits Films For Oscar Consideration

With the end of the year approaching fast, awards season is just around the corner. Recently, Disney put their hat into the Academy Awards ring, submitting four films for consideration for the Animated Feature Film category.

The films that Disney has put to the Academy for consideration are: Disney/Pixar's Cars 2, Touchstone Pictures' Gnomeo & Juliet, ImageMover Digital's Mars Needs Moms and Winnie the Pooh from Walt Disney Animation Studios. In addition to the four from Disney, there are fifteen other films submitted to the Academy; that's a grand total of eighteen films.

Mila Kunis On Board As An 'Oz' Witch

She's coming off an incredible season of awards and critical acclaim associated with the movie "Black Swan," and now she's set to appear in Disney's prequel to the "Wizard of Oz." It's been reported Mila Kunis has signed on to play Theodora in "Oz: The Great and Powerful.

Randy Newman Takes Home Fifth Grammy

It was Randy Newman's fourteenth nomination and fifth win as he took home a Grammy Sunday night for "Toy Story 3." The well-known composer and singer won in the Best Score Soundtrack Album category.

Newman also had a nomination in the Best Song Written for a Motion Picture Category with "Down in New Orleans" from "The Princess and the Frog." "The Weary Kind" from "Crazy Heart" won in that category.

Up next for Newman is the Academy Awards. A twenty-time nominee, he has a nod in the Best Song category for "We Belong Together" from "Toy Story 3."

Disney Nabs Thirteen Academy Award Nominations

Earlier this week, the Oscar nominations were revealed with Disney coming in with a not-too-shabby total of thirteen nods.

It may come as no surprise Disney Pixar's Toy Story 3 leads Disney's nominations with five including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song, a nomination in the Sound Editing field, Best Animated Feature and, arguably the top prize, Best Picture.

"Toy Story 3" Nabs Best Animated Feature Golden Globe

The Disney-Pixar smash hit "Toy Story 3" not only walked away with auidences' hearts this year, but also came away with the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature at Sunday night's 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Though it was predicted to be a sure-bet win for "Toy Story 3", the film beat out several others for the top animated prize, including Disney's "Tangled."

Disney Pixar Withdraws From Animation Awards

This year saw a major change for Disney Pixar as they intentionally withdrew from the Hollywood chapter of the International Animated Film Society. The Society hands out annual awards, more commonly known as Annie Awards, for achievements in animation.

2010 has proved to be a good year for Disney and four of its resorts who received a "Fodors Gold Choice Award."
