Disney Dreamers and Doers Program Accepting Self-Nominations

For 30 years the Disney Dreamers and Doers Academy has been honoring students throughout Central Florida who strive to make the world a better place. Last year nearly 400 students were chosen to represent their schools as a Disney Dreamer and Doer.

Orlando Planning New Sculptures Around Its Downtown Area

If you ask anyone what structures come to mind when you mention central Florida, Cinderella's Castle or the Epcot Ball are certainly forerunners in the answer. Orlando is looking to bring some of that notoriety within its city limits with plans to add nine large, new sculptures in its downtown area, and they are also looking for ideas from artists worldwide.

Cast Members Donate 3.1 Million School Supplies

Walt Disney World cast members were busy earlier this month with a back-to-school supply drive to raise supplies for low-income families in central Florida. Their efforts were a success with over 3 million items, including some 13,000 backpacks, collected. In fact, the amount of pencils, erasers, crayons, rulers and the like collected by the cast members over a three-week period was enough to fill five school buses.

The school supplies will help fill a growing need, acording to Orange County superintendent Barbara Jenkins:

Report Shows 16 Guests Injured at Walt Disney World

The first quarter for 2012 injury report is in, and its results show Walt Disney World had the highest number of reported guest injuries among central Florida's theme parks with sixteen.

It's worth noting, however, that this injury report includes any kind of medical-related incident that happened within the parks.

Central Florida Children To Benefit From Disney's $1.5 Million In Grants

Disney, often known for their charitable needs and giving, is gearing up to give $1.5 million in grants throughout central Florida to benefit children. The "Helping Kids Shine" grants will go to fifty-nine charities and organizations throughout the Orlando area; estimates say the money will benefit some 70,000 children in the region.

Taxi Cab Rates Increase In Orlando

Cab fare in Orlando just got a little steeper as the City Council voted this past Monday to increase rates by 9 percent. Though this isn't directly involving the happiest place on earth, there are Disney World guests that do utilize cab services when visiting central Florida.

While the fare increase applies only to the city of Orlando, Mears Transportation owns around half of the taxi cabs servicing in and around the city. A spokesperson for that company said Mears plans to adhere to the rate increase throughout the Orlando area.

Cinderlla Castle Chosen As a Top Building By American Institute of Architects

It's a familiar and beloved sight of the Magic Kingdom, and now the Florida Association of the America Institute of Architects (AIA Florida) has named Cinderella Castle as one of the Top 100 Buildings in Florida and the Top Building in the Recreational Agriculture Category. The honors come as part of the AIA Florida's "100 Years. 100 Places." celebration of its 100 year anniversary.

President Obama To Visit Disney World

President Barack Obama will be in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World this Thursday to "unveil a strategy that will significantly help boost tourism and travel."

At this time, the specifics of the tourism plans aren't readily available, but Blain Rethmeier, senior vice president of public affars at the U.S. Travel Association had this to say:

We understand that he [Obama] is going to trumpet the value of travel generally and improve facilitation for international travel, especially from China and Brazil.

Themed Weekends Planned For 2012 Flower and Garden Festival

Even though January isn't even half over yet, plans are in full swing for this year's upcoming International Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot. Concerts, displays and special activities are all on tap for the festival, and Disney has planned some themed weekends to take place during the event. Here are those weekends' dates and highlights:

  • March 23 - 25, 2012: Art in the Garden Weekend. This weekend promises to combine nature and art, including "plein air" artists and their works. Check it out at the World Showcase.

Disney VoluntEARS Donate Record Number of Toys

The Disney VoluntEARS have been hard at work collecting toys at WDW's toy drive and recently made a record-setting donation to U.S. Marine Corps Reserve's Central Florida Toys for Tots. Some 30,000 toys, gathered during this year's Toys for Tots toy drive, were delivered by cast members and Mickey himself recently.

Staff at the organization's headquarters say this is the largest donation of toys to date and will go to help some 20,000 children in the Florida counties of Seminole and Orange have a brighter holiday season.

The Original Space Mountain

Recently, I had the opportunity to take in a day at Epcot's International Flower and Garden Festival. One of the biggest and most anticipated annual events held at Walt Disney World, the Flower and Garden Festival, which is co-sponsored by HGTV, boasts acres and acres of gorgeous blooms, more than 75 Disney character topiaries and other special displays, and scores of seminars and chats.
